    Job Overview/Position Summary
     
    Under the supervision of the Director and Assistant Director of Parks and Planning, the Parks Maintenance II staff member is responsible for the upkeep of Park District buildings, parks, landscaped areas, and entire aquatic systems, ensuring that all facilities remain safe, functional, and welcoming for public use. Individuals in this role are expected to perform their duties efficiently and courteously, follow all safety protocols, and exercise sound judgment in serving the best interests of the Park District and its patrons.
     
    Qualifications
     

    • A high school degree or equivalent.
    • Must be at least 18 years old.
    • Have a valid Illinois driver's license.
    • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in facility and maintenance work.
    • Minimum of three (3) years of experience working with aquatic systems, including pools, splash pads, or water features.
    • Minimum of one (1) year of groundskeeping experience.
    • Must pass pre-employment health and drug screening and background check.
    • Must be capable of acquiring and maintaining current CPR and First Aid certification.
    • Must be capable of acquiring and maintaining CPO license within three (3) months.
    • Must be capable of acquiring and maintaining Pesticide Applicator License within six (6) months of employment.
    • Requires completion of PDRMA playground safety training within six (6) months. CPSI license is preferred but not required.
     
    Essential Job Functions
     
    • Perform duties in compliance with District employee and safety policies, while demonstrating and supporting the Park District’s mission, vision, and core values.
    • Must be able to safely perform duties around the public; communicate effectively and collaborate with employees to maintain positive working relationships.
    • Safely operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, landscape and maintenance equipment, mechanical and automated systems and District vehicles. Perform basic troubleshooting on mechanical and automated systems as needed, and maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
    • Conduct daily, weekly, and monthly inspections of facilities, parks, playgrounds, drinking fountains, decorative fountains, lightning, and irrigation systems. Identify, report, and perform repairs, including minor repairs related to plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and carpentry issues. Ensure all facilities and park areas comply with safety standards and building codes, and complete daily work orders and maintenance logs.
    • Assist with the opening and closing of the outdoor aquatic center, splash pad and Park District outdoor water fountains in a timely manner.
    • Inspect, operate, and maintain pool equipment (pumps, filters, heaters, slides, pool features); identify, report, and perform repairs related to equipment malfunctions and safety hazards.
    • Monitor and adjust water chemistry (chlorine, pH, alkalinity) daily, maintain accurate records of testing, chemical use and maintenance activities to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
    • Assist with contractor preventive maintenance inspections, such as but not limited to HVAC systems, RPZ testing, elevators, fire extinguishers, generators, sump pumps, and other quarterly, biannual, or annual services.
    • Open and winterize facilities during seasonal transitions and respond promptly and professionally to emergencies or facility concerns.
    • Assist with special projects and events, including park improvements and renovations, constructing and maintaining outdoor skate rink, and supporting the installation and inspection of decorations for the Festival of Lights event.
    • Perform general grounds upkeep, including snow removal (with shovels, snow blowers, and plows), lawn care, landscaping tasks, and conduct preventive maintenance and minor repairs on District equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.
    • Assist with planning and carrying out maintenance routines, projects, and tasks; help manage the Parks Department budget by tracking expenses and obtaining proposals as needed.
    • May supervise part-time or seasonal Parks staff; effectively manage time and work under multiple deadlines and interruptions while maintaining composure in challenging situations.
    • Available to work extended hours or additional shifts to meet department needs or respond to emergencies.
    • Perform other duties and functions as assigned.
    Marginal Job Functions
    • Load, unload and deliver equipment and supplies as needed.
    • Remove trash and debris from parks and facilities, and carry out deep cleaning tasks, including vacuuming, floor scrubbing, and power washing exteriors and entryways.
    • Perform occasional repairs or replacement of carpet tiles and floor tiles as needed.
    • Perform setup and cleanup for facility and park events.
    • Mow lawns, trim trees, maintain landscaped areas, and perform athletic field upkeep, including dragging, striping, repairing damaged turf, laying sod, and other field restoration tasks to ensure safe, functional, and attractive park grounds.
    Physiological Considerations
    • Heavy work, lifting to 50 pounds frequently and up to 20 pounds constantly. Workers are allowed and encouraged to use mechanical or manual assistance for lifting above 50 pounds as a guideline. Working in teams also aids with heavier activities.
    • General work areas outdoors with frequent exposure to natural and potentially extreme weather conditions, mud, dirt, dust, and various living and decaying organic materials.
    • General work areas indoors with frequent exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, exposure to chemicals such as chlorine, acids, pesticides, fertilizers, cleaning solutions, petroleum products, etc.
    • Personal protective equipment and clothing are required as pertaining to the duty.
     
    Psychological Considerations
     
    • Ability to handle multiple tasks at one time, prioritize and complete them in a timely fashion.
    • Ability to think logically and independently to maintain efficient workflow.
    • Ability to maintain positive professional and effective working relationships.
    • Capacity to utilize effective time management skills to complete assigned tasks.
    • Ability to follow through on projects from beginning to end without immediate supervision.
    • Capacity to lead crews, solve problems and make project-related decisions.
    • Ability to follow direction and communicate in English verbally and in writing. Read and understand printed materials.
    • Capacity to perform basic mathematical computations including measuring, calculating and estimating.
    • Ability to diagnose problems associated with facility and equipment operations.
    • Ability to interpret blueprints, sketches and drawings.
    • Ability to create drawings, sketches, and related notes.
    • An understanding of technical manuals; troubleshooting guides; maintenance, repair and operating instructions; and construction documents.
    • Ability to stay current of required responsibilities and practices for the safety of our patrons, efficiency of our District and preserving the facilities and grounds we maintain.
    Hours of Work and Compensation

    • This position requires non-traditional work week (Tuesday-Saturday) schedules.
    • 40 hours/week, with hours designated by the Director of Park and Planning.
    • Must be flexible with schedule changes, extra hours, and emergency calls.
    • Work location is in person at the Bloomingdale Park District Maintenance Facility, 259 Springfield Drive, Bloomingdale, Ill.
