    Pool - Lifeguard
    Job Description
     
    Functions:
    Under the direction of the Aquatic Supervisor/Coordinator, the Lifeguard is responsible for the safety and well-being of the patrons entering the pool while swimming.
     
    Immediate Supervisor:
    Responsible to the Aquatics Supervisor/Coordinator.
     
    Qualifications:

    • Must be at least 15 years old.
    • Certified as Starguard Aquatics institute. Training provided.
    • CPR/First Aid/AED Certification required. Training provided.
    • Must be able to successfully complete the StarGuard training, in-water skills test and written examination on lifeguard skills and safety.
     
    Duties and Responsibilities:
    Essential Functions
    • Ensure the safety of the pool patrons by enforcing the established pool rules and responding to emergencies when they arise.
    • Administer First-Aid or CPR when needed and report all serious accidents to the Pool Manager or Aquatics Supervisor/Coordinator. Complete necessary paperwork at the conclusion of all rescues and accidents.
    • Participate in random “in-house” lifeguard audits.
    • Participate in random lifeguard audits from outside agencies.
    • Attending all scheduled shifts and lifeguard in-service meetings.
    • Act as a substitute when needed to ensure a safe and effective swimming environment.
    • Maintain a good working relationship with staff members, maintenance personnel, administrative personnel, and pool patrons.
    • Maintain safe and sanitary pool conditions. This includes but is not limited to checking pool chemicals at regular intervals and making the proper adjustments as assigned by the Aquatics Supervisor/Coordinator.
    • Ensure adherence to Park District policies and procedures.
    • Establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with the public and Park District personnel.
    • Provide for reasonable accommodations for participants and personnel in accordance with the American with Disabilities Act.
    • General maintenance of pool deck, locker rooms.
    • Rule enforcement.
     
     
    Marginal Functions
    • Other duties as assigned.
    • Attending staff meetings.
    • Set up and take down deck furniture.
    • Participate in “community activities” as described by the Aquatic Coordinator.
    • Participate in pool rentals and birthday party rentals.
     
    Work Hours and Compensation:
    The position of Lifeguard is a part-time position and is paid every two weeks at an agreed salary. The position is classified as a non-exempt hourly employee status and will work anywhere up to 40 hours per week. No overtime (over 40 hours per week) is allowed unless pre-authorized by the Recreation/Facility Manager. They may work as long as 11 hours, but there are breaks within this period.     Environmental Considerations:
    May be exposed to a high humidity and 86-degree temperatures indoors and outdoors will be exposed to the varying weather conditions, which could include cold, rain, and extreme heat.
     
    Cognitive Considerations:
    The lifeguard must be able to follow the directions of the supervisor and co-workers. The lifeguard must be able to cooperate well with co-workers. The lifeguard must be safety conscientious and always use good judgment.
     
    Psychological Considerations:
    The lifeguard must work closely with co-workers. The lifeguard must work around the general population. The lifeguard must work under supervision and direction of supervisors. The lifeguard has responsibility for the safety of the public in the pool and on the pool deck. The lifeguard may have to work in stressful situations when first aid or CPR is required. The lifeguard must be able to make decisions to ensure safety in and around the pool.
     
    Physiological Considerations:
    The lifeguard works in a climate of 86 degrees Fahrenheit and high humidity. The lifeguard must be able to respond quickly and accurately to emergency situations. Lifeguards are also at risk of being exposed to pool chemicals. Lifeguards must have at least 20/30 vision with or without corrected vision.
